Prevent Windblown Trees
When the wind blows, big trees with lots of limbs can act like a sail. If the wind is strong enough and the tree has enough drag, the tree may get pushed over since, unlike a sailboat, it is rooted to the ground and cannot move.
Make a Dangerous Tree Safe
Wind sailing is a technique that is used to reduce the drag that a tree has by removing some of its limbs. This reduces the danger of wind pushing a tree over.
The cedar tree in the video above is an excellent example of a tree we would windsail. It is weighted heavily on one side. We would recommend reducing every other limb off that side for two reasons:
- Limbs are creating more weight on one side
- To reduce the amount of wind the tree catches
Each tree is different. Sometimes it might be necessary to remove anywhere from 25% to 50% of the limbs on a tree to make it safe.
